Tournament on Saturday August 20th

This tournament is a celebration of John and the sport that he loves. It is a full-day, competitive 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament for both youth (U17, U15 and U13) and adult divisions. Held at Vancouver College School, the day will include a lunchtime special guest appearance, a youth skills session, an outdoor fun area with an inflatable slide and bouncy castle, plus a BBQ and beer garden followed by an end of day party featuring a DJ, food and beverages.

The day will be a great opportunity to connect with friends and members of the wider basketball community representing the past 30 years of basketball in BC.   All proceeds from the day will go to the Cruz-Dumont Boys’ Trust, a fund created to support education and sport related expenses for John’s three sons.

YOUTH DIVISIONS U17, U15, U13

Our partners, Drive Basketball and Split Second Basketball, will be co-hosting the youth divisions.  With over 40 teams we look forward to a competitive and fun tournament.  All teams will play at least 3 games in round robin format, before proceeding to playoffs. As part of the day, we will be hosting a lunchtime special guest appearance and a short skills session presented by some of the most successful players and coaches BC has produced in the last 30 years.

ADULT DIVISION

This division is open to players 18 and up. With space for 10 teams, many of John’s former teammates from all levels will be participating supporting John while reconnecting with old team mates and friends.  Although there will be much banter, competitive juices will be flowing and so look forward to an entertaining and competitive tournament.

TIP-OFF DINNER & SILENT AUCTION, AUGUST 19TH

Our friends at Mahony & Sons are hosting dinner to kick off the tournament.  Starting at 6pm, we will gather with old teammates and coaches, while connecting with the next generation of basketballers.  Appetizers and food stations will ensure everyone is well fuelled.   At 7pm, we will get going with stories from the past – memories of locker room shenanigans and on-court stories of some of the best competition Canada has produced.  Space for this event is limited so please be sure to register early.

Teammates stick together in tough times

We really wanted to put together an event that celebrates the ideals and values John stands for. When you are apart of a team sharing common interests and goals you become more than just teammates.  You become life long friends.  We really want to drive home that message to the younger generation as this is one of the greatest gifts sport offers.  Join us on August 19th and 20th in our celebration of this ideal and enjoy the connections and reconnections of former teammates and coaches.  If you’re beginning your journey in sport, come out with your parents and experience these connections and bonds of former team mates.

Only 10 TEAM SPOTS REMAINING FOR THE ADULT DIVISION…

ABOUT JOHN DUMONT

John's battle with SNUC, a rare and aggressive cancer.

Since September 2015, John Dumont has been battling a rare and aggressive cancer called SNUC, sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma. Unfortunately, in April 2016, John learned that his cancer has spread to his bones, lungs and liver. Basketball has been central to John’s life. He played for the Vancouver College Fighting Irish, the UBC Thunderbirds and Canada’s Junior National Team before going to play professionally in the Philippines. He has coached children for many years, inspiring others to embrace his sport. John’s wife Trixie Cruz, also coaches and their three sons, Jack, Hunter and Cole, all excel at basketball.

For John, basketball has enabled friendships, life lessons, fitness, education, travel, and immense happiness. To read more about John and his battle with SNUC, please visit supportjohndumont.org

frequently asked questions

Is there a waiver form I need to complete?

Yes.  We’ll have waiver forms for each player to complete at the tournament at the time of registration.

Is there an entrance fee for parents and spectators?

No, there will not be a mandatory entrance fee but we will be taking donations at the door if you wish to contribute as the tournament is a fundraiser event.

How many players are allowed on a team?

Each team must have at least 3 players but can have as many players as you’d like.  We recommend no more than 5 as the games are short and playing time would be very limited for teams with more players.

I wont be able to make the tournament but I'd like to show my support. Is there a place that I can make a donation?

Yes, you can make a donation to the “The Cruz-Dumont Boys’ Trust” at www.supportjohndumont.org.

Is there ample parking at the tournament venue?

Yes.  You can park in the Vancouver College school parking lots.  If they are full there is ample street parking around the school.

Where do the proceeds from the tournament go?

John’s family and friends want to reduce the stress on John and Trixie as they navigate the unknown. Both of them had the benefit of education and sport in their lives and we want to ensure their three sons have the same opportunities. We have created The Cruz-Dumont Boys’ Trust to support Cole, Hunter and Jack’s post-secondary education and their sport-related expenses
